Thank you to all the economists that signed the letter in support of an FTT.
Dear Sir/Madam,
Many thanks for being one of a thousand economists to add their name to an open letter in support of a Financial Transaction Tax. We are delighted to have received signatories from 53 countries, including individuals such as Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, Dani Rodrik from Harvard, and Ha-Joon Chang from Cambridge. You can find the full list of economists on the Robin Hood Tax website http://robinhoodtax.org/.
The letter attracted significant international media coverage, appearing on the front page of the Guardian in the UK, and national press in Spain, France, Italy and a number of other countries. This achievement was only possible thanks to you and your interest and commitment to the international financial transaction tax campaign. Alongside a stunt outside the US Treasury, the letter was hand-delivered to Christine Lagarde, the French finance minister, on Friday evening: http://robinhoodtax.org/latest/oxfam-reports-g20-finance-meetings-washington
This was a great opportunity for the campaign to highlight the success of the letter, and surely led to a positive response to the FTT during the G20 Finance ministers’ press conference at the end of their meeting.
The financial transaction tax international coalition is made up of anti-poverty campaigners, faith organizations, green groups and trade unions. Our next six months will be key to the campaign’s success as we head towards the G20 in November. We are in the midst of planning to mobilize supporters during the European finance meetings in June. The role of economists and other finance experts will be critical to persuading governments that a Robin Hood Tax is not only feasible, but morally the right thing to do.
Once again, thank you for your time and commitment and we hope you will join us in following the success of the FTT campaign.
With best wishes.
